Built between 1878 and 1879, the fort of Troyon and its garrison underwent a first siege from September 8 to 13, 1914. Although bombarded, in particular by German shells of large caliber, the heroic resistance of the fort and its soldiers had an importance capital, because it prevented German troops from encircling Verdun from the south during the Battle of the Marne. A few days later, from September 22 to 27, 1914, Fort Troyon resisted a new German attack. The traces of the fighting and bombardments of September 1914 are still visible.
Fallen into oblivion for 80 years, this fort is now maintained by a handful of volunteers from the association "Those of Troyon", an association for the preservation of historical heritage, so that new generations do not forget the sacrifice of their elders. .
