Ornithological discovery trails

Whether you’re an avid birder or simply curious about discovering nature in all its splendor, our bird discovery trails promise an unforgettable experience at the heart of bird life. Two routes await you to explore the treasures of this nature reserve.

Travelers' Memoirs

a memorable stopover for migratory birds

“Mémoires de Voyageurs” takes you on a 6 km round trip, where you’ll discover migratory birds in their preserved habitat of the Réserve Nationale de Chasse et de Faune Sauvage.

The discovery trail invites you to explore the great migratory routes, of which Lorraine is a crossroads for these Great Travelers. This portion of the trail highlights passing birds, wintering birds and summering birds, evoking autumn and spring migrations. Lake Madine, a vital stopover for these birds, offers them ideal conditions to rest, breed in summer and protect themselves from the rigors of winter.

Once you’ve got to know these species, the trail will lead you to games that allow you to retrace the birds’ journey during migration, identify their songs or simply listen to the melodies in the Pointe aux Chênes wood, thanks to the two listening cones that amplify the sounds. You’ll then arrive at the observatoire ornithologique de la Pointe aux Chênes, where you can watch the birds in complete peace.

An ideal route for a family outing!

Landscape of Memory

a natural interlude for unforgettable memories

The “Paysage de Mémoire” trail takes you on a 2 km round trip, through the historical remains and surprising anecdotes of Lac de Madine. Start from the Heudicourt bathing area, opposite the equestrian center.

You’ll be able to admire the butte témoin and the Monument du Montsec from the shores of the lake.

The trail also takes you through six eras of Madine’s history, represented by giant postcards and testimonials from local residents. You’ll have the chance to appreciate art and poetry, as well as observe the birds that call Madine home, such as the Great Egret and the Heron. Along the way, don’t miss the perches offering privileged views of the birds.

Stop in front of the steel sculptures created by artist Victoria Klotz “Les échasses” on which you can find a stainless steel ring attached to the foot evoking the banding of migratory birds, made by jeweler DominiqueJouve. These scultpures add an artistic touch to this rewarding discovery.

Wait no longer to explore these unique trails and let yourself be charmed by the beauty of nature and Madine’s fascinating past.
